After all, we have the consolation of knowing that come fall semester, we will all be returning to the familiar rhythm of psets, friends, and free food. Of course, the nature of college renders that last statement faulty in one regard: not all of us will be returning. The new semester marks not only the exciting arrival of the class of 2018, but also the bittersweet departure of the class of 2014. On one hand, we are proud of their accomplishments and wish them only the best in whatever future lies before them. Everyone brings something unique and amazing to the team and I can’t imagine it being any other way. Of course, this solidarity is partly an inevitable byproduct of the amount of time that we spend together each week on and off the court. The team huddles together to celebrate the last home match of the season. I think there might also be a sandwich on the ground. Im not sure. Like many other fall sports, we started pre-season practice a week before classes started, breaking in new tennis balls while freshman orientation was in full swing. Practice is a daily affair from 5:15-7pm and we have matches virtually every weekend, some at home and a rare few a couple of hours away by bus. Only weeks ago, during our spring season, we played a match at Vassar College in New York and spent the four hour bus ride back playing road trip games and trying not to lose our sanity (though we did discover an appalling lack of desserts that start with the letter E). Our season wraps up with NCAA regionals next weekend and while Friday was the last home match, next weekend could be our last match of the school year. We’ll be saying goodbye to daily practices, to bumpy bus rides, and to blurry pictures of my friend’s lecture notes from the classes I’ve missed. Most importantly, we’ll be saying goodbye to the seniors. I know I’ve only gotten to know them for a year, but it’s been such a year of unforgettable moments. Next year I’ll be a sophomore and the cycle will begin again: new faces, new friends, new family, and the fond memory of all the seniors that have come before. Thankfully, underneath all this change, the joy of the sport and the friendships formed will always be constant. I’ve been playing tennis for eleven years now and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Compromises and the Articles of Confederation free essay sample

The Articles of Confederation caused many problems for our founding fathers. There were many important factors that were abandoned in order to run a functional nation. Some of the problems were: no federal army, no national currency, the federal government could not tax, there were no centralized courts for interstate crimes, and it was extremely difficult to pass a law and almost impossible to pass an amendment. Lucky for us our founding fathers met in Philadelphia and discussed how they can approve on the Confederation. Eventually they came up with the Constitution of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Before the Constitution was created there was a lot of arguing and compromising done. Without compromise it would be impossible to create the Constitution. The first problem that had to be solved to create the new government was to have a federal army. The larger problem with that was the federal government had no power and the states had all the power. Each state had their own small military or militia. One of the huge turning points for the decision of having a federal army was Shays’ Rebellion where farmers in Massachusetts got fed up with the taxes handed down by their state and formed a mob (A1 Pg. 64). The mob went on for several hours before the Massachusetts militia put them down. After this incident congressmen decided that a strong federal government was necessary for rebellion and international treats as well. The reason that many states did not want a federal army was because they did not want a strong federal government and they believed that by giving them an army it gave them more power. Another major problem with the Article was there was no national currency. Each state had coined their own money and each states coins were worth different value. In many cases store and traders would not take money from a different state. This was a huge problem for many reasons. After the war we had a huge debt to France because they had given us a ton of money and soldiers to support us. In order to give them money we need money. There was no federal mint and the federal government could not tax (another problem altogether). The other problem they had without a national currency was many people were making counterfeit money from different states because it was so simple. The reason for the lack of federal currency was again a fear of the federal government becoming to powerful and each state becoming equal. Because the founding fathers did not want a tyranny in their new nation they gave the federal government a very minuscule amount of power. The power of the federal government was so limited that they could neither tax the people of the United States, nor the states themselves. This became a huge problem was the US had to pay off their debt to France because they had no money because they could not tax. The other reason it was extremely necessary for the government to hand down taxes was to fund and support a national army. During the Articles of Confederation the federal government was only allowed to request for taxes and not demand. Only 25% of the taxes suggested were paid. After the Constitution the federal government had the power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excise. (D2 Pg. 175) While the United Sates were under the Articles of Confederation a problem with the judicial system occurred. The problem was there was no federal judicial system, no centralized courts. That meant it you commit a crime in one state and cross state boarders the next day your most likely going to get away with the crime you committed. This was an extremely dangerous situation for the nation because many crimes were being committed and no one was being convicted. Another problem with not having a centralized court was there was no supreme court where large cases involving multiple states could be held. Another problem with the Articles of Confederation was it was extremely difficult to pass a law and it was next to impossible to pass an amendment. out of the 13 states had to agree on it before the law was passed and all 13 states had to agree to pass an amendment and that rarely happened due to the differences between the North and South. That is why there were many compromises during this time. The most famous of the compromises was the Great compromise. The Great Compromise took both the Virginia and New Jersey Plans and met in the middle. This was the start of the c onstitution and our new government plan. The argument was between large states and small states. The large states wanted to base representatives by population while the mall states wanted all representation to be equal between states. Eventually James Madison with Benjamin Franklin’s help would come up with the Virginia Plan. The Virginia Plan stated that we were to have a bicameral government that consisted of the House of Representatives, that was based on population (what the large sates wanted), and the Senate, where all states had the same number of representatives. (What the small wanted. ) with this bicameral government and the House of Representatives there comes another problem, how do we count slaves? Because the amount of representatives a state was given was based on their population any state with slaves obviously wanted slaves to count towards their population and any state that didn’t have slaves didn’t want them to count towards the population. The two sides in this argument were the North and the South. The South were the ones that wanted to have slaves count towards the population and the North did not. The argument went on for a long time and almost caused a civil war, which would have split the nation, and if that were the case then we would most likely still be a British colony. In 1787 delegates James Wilson and roger Sherman proposed the three-fifths Compromise. The compromise simple stated that every 5 slaves counted for 3 people of the population. After this proposal both the North and the South agreed that this was fair and there was no civil war. To conclude, the Article of confederation caused many problems for the early United States because it weakened the federal government so much that the states did not feel united and instead of one country it was 13 states of their own. After many compromises and conventions our founding fathers came up with a governmental plan that we still use today, the Constitution of Independence. The Constitution gave us a bicameral legislature with three branches of government that all looked over each other in a system called checks and balances. We should all be very thankful for compromises because without them we might not be the nation we are today because it would have been impossible to create the Constitution.

In other words, the imagery is still of the gifts offered by the shepherd but the nymph uses imagery such as â€Å"wither,† and â€Å"rotten† to show the pleasures of having these gifts will not last  forever. All in all, both poems use similar imagery to describe a pastoral lifestyle but their diction is what sets these two poems apart. Diction can be defined as a style of writing determined by the choice of words the author uses. In both â€Å"The Passionate Shepherd to His love† and â€Å"The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd† the authors use such words as: flocks, gowns, roses, love, and other words to make a distinct connection between the two poems. However, the diction used in â€Å"The Passionate Shepherd to His love† is different because Marlowe uses words such as, â€Å"we† and â€Å"delight† to make his poem sound more cheerful in hope winning the love of his lady (Marlowe 914). In contrast, â€Å"The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd† uses words such as: If, break, fade, fall, forgotten and might to show the nymph’s uncertainty in the shepherd’s words (Raleigh 914-915). Therefore, not only is diction a good way to analyze the similarities and difference between two poems, but then again a reader can also analyze through tone. Through tone, the reader is able to learn about a characters personality and disposition. The tone the shepherd uses in â€Å"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love† is hopeful and optimistic because he offers all the pleasures of his rural lifestyle in hope of love returned by the lady. Marlowe says, â€Å"Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove that valleys, groves, hills, and fields, woods or steepy mountain yields† (Marlowe 913). In other words, the shepherds tone is optimistic because he hopes the pleasures of experiencing the beauty in nature will win thy lady’s love. While the shepherds tone is hopeful, the tone in â€Å"The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd† is pessimistic and cold; perhaps the nymph is even realistic. Raleigh provides the reader with the nymphs cold tone is the opening stanza, â€Å"If all the world and love were young, and truth in every shepherd’s tongue, these pretty pleasures might me move to live with thee and be thy love† (Raleigh 914). For instance, the nymph’s tone is doubtful because she uses words such as: â€Å"if† and â€Å"might.† In addition, to the nymphs tone being doubtful she is also comical knowing what the shepherd says is just a lie to get her to be thy love. Drive Goals And Deadlines With Task Templates Imagine if your paycheck was dependent on your team hitting every goal. Nowhere to hide At the end of two weeks, the KPIs told the story of getting paid (or not). Thatd be rough for some of us. But, what if theres a simple way to increase your odds of succeeding by 4.3X? Obviously youd do it, right? Well, there is. According to our research, marketers who set goals are 429% more likely to report success than those who dont. A Harvard study found that setting goals: Increases motivation in individuals and groups. And increases achievement in nearly any setting. Your cross-functional team is no different. While setting goals is amazing, its not the same as achieving them. So, how do you parlay goal setting into the promised land of success? How can marketers parley goal setting into the promised land of success with @?Reverse Engineer Your Goals Into Tasks Attached To Deadlines Its time to reverse engineer your goals into tasks attached to firm deadlines. Reverse engineering your goals is pretty standard fare. If your goal is to increase qualified leads by 40%, you define the steps to get there. But imagine your cross-functional team has six people: Team lead (you) Designer Copywriter Editor Sales PPC manager Developer Where do you start? Probably with your standard bevy of spreadsheets and tools. Only, you  manage one process in tool X, another in tool Y, another in tool Z When you work with sales on a new deck, you use Basecamp to manage the workflow. This is because both your team and sales have access to the app. When you create blog posts, however, you use Asana to manage the process among your team because thats what your design team uses. And when you create email campaigns, you use Google Sheets. Even when there are similarities in your process (e.g. plan/write/design/edit/schedule), you have to spend time learning how to execute the process in new tools- not to mention, trying to remember where all this stuff lives. Use The Task-Simplification Framework An excellent remedy is a framework called task simplification. Former CEO of Intel, Andrew S. Grove, described it in his landmark book,  High Output Management. And its perfect for planning goal-driven marketing workflows. For each piece you’ll create (think blog post, e-book, landing page, etc.), run through these steps (head’s up- I’ve built upon Andrew’s original advice): Write out every task that needs to be done. Identify and delete the tasks that are unnecessary. Combine tasks together that will be completed at the same time. Delegate only one person to complete one task (e.g. don’t expect two people to complete one task). Assign a due date for each task as â€Å"{#} of days before publish†. This framework will help you  reduce the amount of work you take on by 30-50%. In addition, by setting clear task due dates, you know when to begin each piece to know when to realistically set deadlines. For example, when you know that blog post will take 22 days to produce, the soonest you can publish it is 23 days from today (if you were to start it today). That’s powerful info that will help you plan realistic deadlines and hit them.
